I remember the first time I saw Frank Biles. It was a February evening and we were meeting for prayer before the group split up to go into the dorms and share Christ with anyone who was interested. He was one of the guys. I remember thinking “Who is that guy?” Since I had just transferred to this school I didn’t know anyone very well. Later, I was assigned by our BSU director to organize evening services in area churches and Frank was one of the ones who would preach, Joe and Errol would assist with the youth games and music. So I got to know him a bit more outside of school.
One night when I called to speak to Frank about another church service, his roommate, Errol, answered and Frank was at work. In talking, Errol asked me to come play tennis with the group from their church college group and said Frank would be happy to pick me up. I was surprised but said I’d go. Later that week, I called again to confirm the service time and Errol confirmed my address. On Friday evening, a car showed up at my home with three college men in it. My mother was a little concerned since she knew nothing about any of them except that they were “preacher men.” We played tennis for a while and then went back to Frank, Errol and David’s apartment for games. It was a fun night and Frank led a brief Bible study during the evening. That was our first “date” and I agreed to come the following Friday. Frank picked me up and that was the pattern for the summer. We became engaged in August and married in January under God’s leading. Three months later we were called to pastor a church in Friday, Texas. This was an hour and a half drive up and back each week. What a blessed three years we spent pastoring there and going to school/working during the week.
God had to really move for Frank and me to be at the same school and the same time. Frank was four years older than I but had just started going to college. He joined the navy just out of high school and spent three years aboard air craft carriers. When he completed his tour, he worked at a funeral home in his home town for a year or so. Then his brothers invited him to Houston to go into business as Texaco service station owners. Then after too many 84 hour weeks, they sold the station and John and James, his older brothers, got him a job with them at Texas Instruments in Southwest Houston.
James invited Frank to a revival at Jacinto City Baptist Church one night. During the service the Spirit talked to Frank and he recommitted his life to Jesus Christ. His plans were to finish a college degree and serve wherever the Lord opened a door. He became a teacher of fifteen year old boys at his church. This was all before I met him. The college students had asked the pastor to teach them about the second coming of Christ and he began a class on Saturday nights. After the summer of our tennis games, I began driving over for the study. Frank offered to pick me up and we went together to those. We never had a real “date” because we began going to the Open Door Mission on Friday evenings and Frank would preach and I would sing. Saturday was Bible study. Sunday was a regular church day with the afternoon spent with Frank, his roommates and his mother, who lived in the apartment with them and cooked and cleaned for her rent.
Frank had already given up drinking and smoking before I knew him, so I knew he was serious about serving the Lord. We spent 49 years together doing just that. We had dark days, many troubles, and discouragements, but God always was faithful to forgive our sin and selfishness and teach us how to really love one another as Christ loves His church. I truly miss my Honey, but know where he is and that one day I’ll see him again. God says so in His Word and He cannot lie.
