Count it All Joy! How?

When the bad things happen in life, James 1:2 says “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials and temptations.” I wonder how we can do that. A tragedy or trial is not an easy thing. We are definitely not seeking it, nor are we asking for it. Whatever form it takes. We (or maybe just I) don’t eagerly look forward to the difficult times life brings our way. How can I give thanks for and rejoice when I am hurting? It seems impossible and yet, that is what God calls us to do. If He asks us to rejoice and be thankful in all things, then He must have a way for us to do that.

Through my life I have had many trials, a child needing heart surgery; being rejected by fellow believers; Frank losing his job; the death of both of my parents and brothers; and after Frank’s death, the flooding of my house by Harvey rains to name a few. How do I count it all joy? How do I give thanks during these times? When I look into His Word, God shows me exactly how. If I obey Him, He gives me His joy.

The answer is simple, but not always easy. Keeping my eyes on Jesus and what He has done for me and is doing for me and in me during these times. Peter walked on the water until he took his eyes off of Jesus! If we truly understand the lovingkindness of God, we can trust Him in whatever He allows to come our way. He does say: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose. …to become conformed to the image of His Son.” Romans 8:28-29. God uses our trials to change us into the person He wants us to be. I have found throughout my life, that as long as I keep my eyes and thoughts on Him, I have His joy and peace in my soul. I can respond to rejection with love and forgiveness. I can rejoice that my loved ones are enjoying Him in heaven. I can expect Him to bring me the help I need to rebuild a house and make it my home. Even in the midst of illness, I know He is with me and has restored my energy and life. I know He will always do the right thing for me, even though it may take time for me to understand.

My Savior and Lord loves me with a love nothing can ever take away. Jesus is always with me and in me through the Holy Spirit. He has promised He will never leave me, nor forsake me, and that He never changes. I can count on Him to always keep His Word. He is righteous and just. He knows my heart and what I need to learn and change. Such blessed confidence that has been proven time and time again in my life.

So yes, rejoicing in troubles is possible when one knows the Lord of All the Earth. The King of kings and Lord of lords Jesus is all I need.
