Nearly 50 years ago now, when Frank and I first married, he taught me to make “Hoppin’ John.” A dish with rice and black-eyed peas. It was one of his favorites. I had never heard of it but learned to make it and did often. I told Frank that his family must have made up this recipe since no one I knew had ever heard of it! Several years later, imagine my chagrin when looking through the daily newspaper the main story of the “women’s section” was about “hoppin’ John.” There were all sorts of different recipes each just a bit different in ingredients. I finally had to admit that it was a real dish.
This morning when I was working the daily crossword, I came across this clue: “a dish using black-eyed peas” and the answer was “hoppin John!” I wish Frank were here for me to show it to him! He would have loved it! What a neat way to begin this new year. Always amazes me how God lets us find remembrances of our loved ones in our daily routines. So blessed!
